Kashmir Great Lakes – Why It Is Called the Most Beautiful Trek in India

Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) is often regarded as the crown jewel of Indian treks. This 7-day adventure takes you through seven stunning alpine lakes, each with its own unique color and character, set amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Kashmir Valley.

The Seven Lakes

  • Vishansar Lake: The first major lake, crystal clear with a turquoise hue, surrounded by snow-capped peaks
  • Kishansar Lake: A twin lake of Vishansar, slightly smaller but equally mesmerizing
  • Gadsar Lake: Known as the "Lake of Fish" – a beautiful green-colored lake at 12,000 feet
  • Satsar Lakes: A group of seven interconnected lakes on a vast meadow
  • Gangbal Lake: The largest and deepest lake, considered sacred by locals
  • Nundkol Lake: A pristine lake at the base of Mount Harmukh

Trek Highlights

The KGL trek is a visual spectacle from start to finish. You walk through lush green meadows carpeted with wildflowers, cross high-altitude passes at 13,000+ feet, and camp beside pristine alpine lakes every night. The Gadsar Pass at 13,750 feet offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Kashmir Valley.

Best Season

July to September is the ideal window. The meadows are in full bloom with hundreds of species of wildflowers, the weather is pleasant during the day (10-20°C), and the lakes are at their most vibrant colors.

Important Tips

Since this trek is in Kashmir, you need a special permit from the forest department. Our team handles all permits and logistics. Carry warm layers as temperatures can drop to 0°C at night even in summer. Stay hydrated and trek slowly to avoid AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).
